Learning on the job

We believe that skills are best developed on the job. Hence, rather than going through a lengthy training program, our new associates get to work as soon as possible on a project with our clients. There, with the help of experienced consultants, they quickly acquire not only technical skills but also experience client interaction first hand.

International exposure

Our clients have global footprints, which is why international assignments tend to be the norm. In order to maximise international exposure for as many consultants as possible, we staff cross-border projects on a global basis, rather than from individual offices. On top of that, there is the option of a secondment to our office in New York.

Personal coaching

For more senior career stages (Manager and up), we offer personalized coaching sessions. These are based on a thorough personal assessment and focus on key aspects of the respective level, such as leadership skills.

Training sessions

On multiple occasions throughout the year, we provide sessions with top-notch speakers on a range of subjects relevant to our work - from building presentations and financial models to soft skills like C-level communication, off-the-cuff speaking in public, creativity techniques, and negotiation and leadership skills. The courses are tailored to the respective career stages.

Welcome Days

We want to make sure that new entrants feel right at home from day one. That's why we have created the "welcome days", an initial orientation covering basics ranging from the firm's history and culture to day-to-day processes, including a series of team building exercises and a fireside chat with our Managing Partner.

Mentoring

Every new joiner is assigned an experienced consultant to make getting started easier and to guide him or her during the first few months. This "buddy" serves as the primary contact for questions on getting started and on the firm itself. This includes questions on the first project, regarding personal development or admin.

Participation in the firm's success

We believe that business success is always the sum of the shared commitment of many individuals. Hence, variable compensation for our consultants is determined as a function of the overall performance of the firm.

New horizons

As a truly entrepreneurial firm, we constantly look beyond our current horizon. Our consultants are an integral part of business development, by building thought leadership and developing new and markets, by acquiring new projects or by writing studies on current issues.

Work in/for Africa

As a firm, we are committed to supporting Africa through the projects of the Stern Stewart Institute. Our initiatives include a beekeeping project in Burkina Faso - now the largest honey producer in West Africa - and a focal point for youth in Ghana. Consultants may work on Africa projects remotely or on-site in Africa. Committing time to the Institute is an equally important aspect of career development as is work on one of our client-facing engagements.

Executive program

In addition to MBA programs, we also encourage executive education . We support this through an exemption from project work as well as a financial contribution. Qualifying programs are recognized as part of the career path. Project Managers are free to select their individual program in coordination with the firm.

MBA programm

We support consultants who want to enhance their degree with an MBA from a renowned business school through a comprehensive sabbatical scheme including a financial contribution. MBA programs are recognized as part of the career path. The consultant has full discretion in selecting a business school. For certain MBA programs (e.g. London Business School), there is the opportunity of a simplified admissions procedure.

Part-time work

To provide consultants with the flexibility they need and to help create the right work-life balance, we are open to discussing flexible working time models on a case-by-case basis.

Parental leave

Building a career as a consultant with Stern Stewart while having a family is important to us. That's why we offer the option of a parental leave and flexible working arrangements for every career stage.

Ph.D. dissertation

We support Ph.D. programs through a comprehensive sabbatical scheme including a financial contribution. Obtaining a Ph.D. is recognized as part of the career path. The consultant has full discretion in selecting a topic and university. Stern Stewart collaborates with a number of selected universities.

Developing skills

Skills - The diverse development of our consultants is extremely important to us. Thus we keep developing professional skills (e.g. through training and extensive project work) just as much in view as personal development (e.g. through mentoring, coaching and international assignments).

Living and breathing entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship - Entrepreneurship defines our corporate culture. Therefore, a commitment in the company to project work is also of course the same for our employees. This provides variety and a direct link between the contributions of each individual consultant and the success of the company.

Taking Adventage of Flexability

Flexibility - We firmly believe that the development of high performance is only possible if appropriate flexibility is allowed. This includes for example the balancing of career and family life or even one's own personal development, such as through the acquisition of additional academic degrees.

From trainee to project manager

After completing traineeships in different branches I had the opportunity to familiarize myself with the consultancy business at Stern Stewart in 2012. Things got going right away with an international client, which is why I only spent a few days of my traineeship on German soil. Demanding, international projects, the high level of trust and responsibility shown to me as a trainee and, on top of that, a really great environment with young colleagues cemented my decision to launch my career at Stern Stewart.

  • 2008 Traineeship at Stern Stewart
  • 2009 Hired on by Stern Stewart and still work there
  • In 2012 promoted to manager
  • Main topics: Optimizing finance functions in divisions of major corporations, involving setup and optimization of controlling and/reporting systems, repositioning in the areas processes and organization, strategy and investment, portfolio optimization, remuneration systems, cost-cutting programs and restructuring overhead costs, commissioning
  • Studied Economics at the University of Passau and at Trinity College Dublin
  • Languages: English and French
  • Passions: I am active with the Johanniter in my free time, and volunteer in holiday camps for handicapped children or in campaigns for countries in need. Music is also an important part of my life
  • Passions: water sports (especially diving), travelling (with a focus on Asia and Africa), entrepreneurship

„Shaping the company and being an entrepreneur, be it at the customer or in one's own company - that's Stern Stewart for me“

These vagabond's shoes…

England, the Netherlands and Canada - even while attending school and university, I had visited many different countries and cultures. I enjoy experiencing other cultures and meeting new people. This aspect is of course also very important to me in my professional life. And what better place to get this than in an internationally active consulting firm? After several internships for different strategy consulting firms, it became clear to me that Stern Stewart was the place for me to be. A "boutique" where I can personally make a difference and at the same time find the kind of internationality that I am looking for! During the first two years I was not only traveling to visit customers across Europe, I was also deployed to one of our customers' local subsidiaries in Boston, and I also worked at our New York office for three months.

  • Began working at Stern Stewart as a consultant with a master's degree in 2011
  • Manager since 2015
  • Recent projects: New orientation/ securing of a site for an industrial conglomerate, optimization of the distribution in the technology industry
  • Studied International Business Economics at Maastricht University (Netherlands)
  • Double degree in Master Finance from Queens University in Canada and from Maastricht University in the Netherlands
  • Hobbies: Hockey, soccer, skiing

„International experience, contact with customers from day one and actual responsibility. I can be a part of everything!“

From CEO workshop participant to associate

During my studies in Mannheim, I got to know SSCO at the Career Fair. In the spring of 2016, I applied for the 'CEO for 2 Days' workshop and together with 11 other participants spent two exciting days at the Munich office. During the workshop, I noticed that at SSCO people are developed and challenged individually. Moreover, I was impressed right away with the familiar atmosphere in the company which is why I applied for the position of associate after the workshop.

  • My career at Stern Stewart started as an associate in early 2016
  • Recent projects: Market launch in the lighting industry, cost reduction program at an oil and gas company
  • Hobbies: travelling, running and exploring my new hometown of Munich
  • University degree in business administration from Mannheim and a Master's degree in marketing, strategy and innovation from London

„Thanks to the 'CEO for 2 Days' Workshop, I gained some real insight into the company and felt integrated right from the start. In just two months I went from being a workshop participant to a colleague.“
